At the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund (SFF), we believe in fostering partnerships that make smart economic sense for businesses, nonprofits, and communities. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight Solar Holler, a regional solar installation company delivering reliable and cost-effective energy solutions across West Virginia, Kentucky, Southern Ohio, and Southwest Virginia.
With a track record of nearly 2,300 successful installations to date and 8,428 kW of solar energy added in 2024, Solar Holler has proven a dependable partner in helping organizations lower energy costs and reinvest savings where they matter most—back into their missions and communities.
In Partnership With Solar Finance Fund, Solar Holler has:
- Created 1.7 megawatts of new solar energy
- Worked with 24 churches and nonprofits, strengthening our communities
- Generated $9 million in lifetime savings to be reinvested
Supporting Local Organizations with Real Savings

Through our partnership, the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund has supported Solar Holler’s development of 1.7 MW of solar energy for 24 churches and nonprofits, generating $9 million in lifetime savings for these organizations. This energy bill savings will be reinvested into critical services such as providing access to nutritious food, sheltering lost and abandoned animals, and educating and protecting children.
Solar Holler’s locally driven approach to solar development aligns well with the SFF’s mission to help organizations make economically sound decisions that deliver long-term returns by prioritizing financial stewardship.
The Appalachian Solar Finance Fund has helped us deliver real financial benefits to communities across Appalachia. Together, we’re helping nonprofits keep more money in their budgets for the things that matter most.

Growing Jobs and Strengthening Local Economies
Our partnership with Solar Holler doesn’t just result in savings—it creates opportunities. The growth of their Commercial Sales division, supported by SFF and new federal incentives, has enabled Solar Holler to expand its workforce to 94 employees.
Every solar project means more local jobs, more skilled workers, and more economic growth for the region. Solar Holler proves that solar energy can be a practical and profitable investment for Appalachia with every new installation.
Practical Tools for Nonprofits
One of our favorite success stories from this partnership is the solar project at Howell’s Mill Christian Assembly. It used an SFF grant and bridge loan from Invest Appalachia to install its solar system while waiting for federal incentive payouts.
This project is projected to save $140,000 over its lifetime, freeing up essential resources for the camp’s mission. Howell’s Mill is now sharing their experience with other faith-based organizations, encouraging them to explore similar opportunities with Solar Holler and the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund.
Solar Holler’s Dina Hornbaker said, “They’re so happy with their project that they’re spreading the word to the broader faith community of church camp leaders who may also be able to benefit from solar.”
Solar energy isn’t just about reducing costs—it’s about making smart investments that deliver real economic benefits. Nonprofits and businesses across Appalachia recognize the value of solar energy, especially when they have access to support from the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund to make projects affordable and achievable.
