Appalachian Resilience Hubs Provide Support and Recovery

Nonprofit organizations Footprint Project, Invest Appalachia, and Appalachian Voices (fiscal sponsor of the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund) are supporting the development of Resilience Hubs to aid Helene recovery and build long-term community strength. These permanent solar power installations provide reliable, independent energy that keeps people safe, connected, and prepared for future emergencies.

Central Appalachia has faced generations of disinvestment, and the region’s infrastructure gaps are increasingly exposed by climate-driven disasters. Yet across small towns, rural areas, and underserved neighborhoods, communities are leading solutions that strengthen both everyday life and long-term preparedness.

While some microgrids are mobile, Resilience Hubs are permanent upgrades to trusted local spaces—such as community centers, churches, fire departments, schools, and small businesses—that serve as gathering points in times of need. Each Hub is equipped with solar panels and battery storage to power essential services, from communications and medical devices to medicine storage and food preparation. Year-round, they reduce utility costs, expand access to resources like food pantries and youth programs, provide backup power during outages, and help weave stronger community connections.
