Thanks to a smart investment in American-made energy solutions, KCEOC Community Action Partnership in Knox County, Kentucky, is putting solar power to work. It’s cutting costs, supporting jobs, and making local dollars go further.
This solar upgrade isn’t just about energy, it’s about independence.
With support from the Solar Finance Fund, The Nature Conservancy’s Cumberland Forest Community Fund, and others, KCEOC has installed a solar array on its Emergency Support Center. SFF contributed a $17,000 grant sub-award toward a 74-kilowatt rooftop solar PV project that will save KCEOC $467,000 in lifetime energy costs. The energy savings now go directly back into vital services, such as workforce training, preschool programs, senior support, and housing assistance for families in Southeastern Kentucky.

This solar upgrade isn’t just about energy, it’s about independence. By reducing overhead costs and protecting against rising energy prices, KCEOC is strengthening its operations for the long haul. The project was completed by local contractor Solar Energy Living, based in Corbin, KY, keeping skilled jobs right here at home.
With 60 years of service, KCEOC continues to find practical ways to stretch funding and meet the needs of nearly 7,000 Kentuckians each year. The new solar system was designed to serve multiple electric meters, allowing for maximum benefit across the facility, and will be paid off quickly with federal ITC elective payment.
This is a real-world example of how Appalachian communities are using American energy innovation to build stronger, more self-reliant local economies.
